What Is An Intraoral Camera?

Posted .

When visiting Whiteridge Aesthetic Dentistry you will notice that Dr Sherman and Dr Hepworth utilize a variety of instruments as they examine your mouth. One instrument you may not be familiar with is the intraoral camera. Just as the name suggests, an intraoral camera allows the doctors to take photographs of the inside of your mouth. In addition to being a valuable diagnostic tool an intraoral camera also documents valuable information that your insurance company may require.

An intraoral camera is an invaluable diagnostic tool for a variety of cosmetic and restorative dental care which includes:

  • Dental implants
  • Dental veneers
  • Full composite veneers
  • Tooth decay
  • Periodontal disease
  • Wisdom tooth extraction
  • Tooth extractions
  • Dental crowns
  • Dental fillings
  • Root canal treatment
  • Dental cleanings and exams
  • Full-mouth reconstruction

We are all familiar with the concave mirror, the small mirror on the end of a pen sized instrument. Whereas concave mirrors can offer unique views of the mouth and teeth, they do not offer a permanent record of an exam. With a permanent record doctors are given valuable insight that an exam with a concave mirror may otherwise overlook. These advantages include:

  • With a capability of 90 degree movement, bright lights, and a monitor the doctor views the entire oral cavity
  • In the event of surgery including dental implants the doctor can complete a “virtual surgery” procedure prior to the day of your treatment
  • Images can be saved on the cloud and used for future reference
  • Ease of use due to pen sized design
  • Intraoral cameras can detect conditions even in routine exams
  • As mentioned, intraoral cameras offer proof of condition as required by some insurances
  • Offers the reassurance that best practices and procedures are being used for your dental health when you visit Whiteridge Aesthetic Dentistry
